New River Gorge National Park Smashes Tourism Records in Early 2026
Visitor numbers are up 34% year-over-year as the park continues to grow five years after its redesignation.
New River Gorge National Park and Preserve has welcomed more than 850,000 visitors in the first four months of 2026, a 34% increase over the same period last year.
Economic Impact
The tourism boom has been a windfall for surrounding communities. Fayette County's hospitality sector has seen revenues climb 28% year-over-year.
"We've gone from a hidden gem to a must-visit destination," said Lisa Cavendish, executive director of the New River Gorge Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Adventure Tourism
Rock climbing, whitewater rafting, and the famous Bridge Walk continue to be top draws. A new via ferrata route opened this spring has already become one of the park's most popular attractions, with reservations booked solid through October.
