The driver injured in Thursday's Route 33 crash at WBUC Road near Buckhannon has died, two days after his 27-year-old passenger was killed. Two children in the back seat had minor injuries.
Upshur County is grieving a second loss this weekend after a crash on U.S. Route 33 near Buckhannon took the lives of both adults riding in one car, while two little ones in the back seat survived.
According to the Buckhannon Police Department, the crash happened around 3:22 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, at the intersection of Route 33 and WBUC Road. Police said a 2012 Ford Focus driven by Thomas Knight, 35, of Jane Lew, was trying to cross Route 33 when it was struck in a T-bone-style collision by a 2020 Toyota RAV4 traveling west on the highway.
Aislinn Posey, 27, of Buckhannon, was a passenger in the Ford. She was taken from the scene by ambulance and later died from her injuries.
Knight was taken to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown in critical condition. He died there on Saturday, Oct. 31, making him the second person to lose his life as a result of the crash.
Two young children, ages 1 and 2, were riding in the back seat of the Ford. Police said they were taken to WVU Medicine Golisano Children's Hospital for observation and suffered only minor injuries.
The driver of the RAV4, Earl Conrad, 51, of Weston, was injured and treated at St. Joseph's Hospital in Buckhannon. Police said he has since been released.
No charges have been filed, and the Buckhannon Police Department says its investigation is ongoing.
Route 33 is a road just about everybody in north-central West Virginia knows by heart. It carries folks between Buckhannon, Weston and Elkins every day, and intersections like WBUC Road see plenty of traffic crossing the four-lane. Moments like this are a heavy reminder to slow down, look twice and give every crossing the extra second it deserves.
Our hearts go out to the families and friends of Aislinn Posey and Thomas Knight, to the two little ones who were in that car, and to everyone in Buckhannon, Jane Lew and across Upshur and Lewis counties who is hurting right now. If you knew them, we hope you'll hold their memory close and wrap their loved ones in that good West Virginia kindness in the days ahead.
