Shepherdstown — West Virginia's oldest town, tucked along the Potomac in Jefferson County — opens its famous back-alley gardens for a self-guided walking tour this Saturday. The tour winds through a series of private gardens hidden behind the town's historic storefronts and homes, many of which would normally be invisible to passersby.
After the walk, participants are invited to tea — an appropriately civilized cap to a stroll through one of the Eastern Panhandle's most charming streetscapes. The event benefits local causes and is organized by community volunteers.
Shepherdstown is a walkable, bikeable historic district with excellent restaurants and shops — plan to make an afternoon of it.
