New River Gorge Sees Record Visitation in Spring 2026

Americas newest national park continues to draw visitors from across the country, with spring 2026 numbers surpassing all previous records.

New River Gorge National Park and Preserve reported a record-breaking spring season, with more than 420,000 visitors between March and May 2026 — a 15 percent increase over the same period last year.

Growing National Attention

Since its redesignation from a national river to a national park in December 2020, New River Gorge has steadily climbed the ranks of most-visited parks in the eastern United States. Park officials attribute the continued growth to expanded trail systems, improved visitor facilities, and a growing reputation as a world-class climbing and whitewater destination.

"We are seeing families, solo adventurers, and international travelers who tell us they had never considered West Virginia before," said Park Superintendent Lizzie Watts. "The national park designation put us on their radar, and the experience keeps them coming back."

Economic Impact

The surge in visitors has rippled through the local economy in Fayette and Raleigh counties. Hotels, outfitters, and restaurants in Fayetteville, Beckley, and surrounding communities report strong bookings through the fall season.

The Fayette County Commission estimates that outdoor recreation tourism now supports more than 2,800 jobs in the region, up from roughly 1,900 before the national park designation.

Managing Growth

Park officials are working to balance accessibility with conservation. A new shuttle system connecting Long Point and Endless Wall trailheads launched in April to reduce parking congestion, and additional seasonal rangers have been deployed to high-traffic areas.

"Our goal is to welcome everyone while protecting what makes this place extraordinary," Watts added. "The gorge is resilient, but it needs thoughtful stewardship as visitation grows."
